A SUMMERTIME SPECIAL: THE SECOND ANNUAL CONCERT ON THE QUAD FEATURES THE KEN MILLER BAND AT THE COLORADO SPRINGS SCHOOL
Colorado Springs School - 07/22/08
Colorado Springs, Colo. – The Colorado Springs School (CSS) invites the public to the 2nd Annual Concert on the Quad on Sunday August 17th, 2008 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Once again, Ken Miller, Director of Entertainment for the Broadmoor Hotel, has put together a great evening of music. The lead will be taken by the Ken Miller Band: (Ken Miller pianist, composer and arranger; Scott Webring; bass and George Thompson; drums) with added soloists Brad Eastin, saxophone; Wayne Wilkinson, guitar; and special guest vocalist Lila Mori. Laurie Gabrial and the Aspen Strings will also add their trademark silky sound to the evening.

"We're all delighted to be making our contribution to The Colorado Springs School. I've always been glad to bring music to the campus. I think the educational program they offer is sensational," said Miller. "Last year's concert was a dream, and we're going to be more intimate this year. I can promise that when our jazz combo is added to Laurie's strings and Lila Mori adds her sultry voice to the mix, we will be putting out a sound that will be absolutely beautiful."

"This is a great setting for a tremendous party and with Ken's music added to the natural beauty and perfect concert and picnic setting off the terrace of the Trianon, we will again be presenting a truly spectacular summertime event," said Kevin McTernan, Director of Advancement at The Colorado Springs School.

Deluxe Admission is $100 which includes premium table seating and a gourmet dinner buffet with a selection of bottled beer and wine. General Admission is $25 for open picnic seating on the lawn of The Colorado Springs School quad. Those who purchase general admission tickets are encouraged to bring their own picnic dinner, beverages, blankets, and lawn chairs. Sponsors of the evening include: Gazette Charities, Pianos New and Used and Senger Design Group. All proceeds will benefit the continued restoration of Colorado Springs' magnificent 101 year old architectural structure, the historic Trianon on The Colorado Springs School campus. Currently, two major initiatives are underway in the historic Trianon's restoration plan. The school is working with Senger Design Group to upgrade and advance learning spaces and classrooms for the Middle School while maintaining the historic charm and integrity of the building. Additionally, the school is working to replace the historic Trianon's 72 windows with "low-E", double-pane, and energy efficient glass while also restoring the window woodwork and moldings to their original glory. To date, one window has been completed as part of the window pilot project.

General Admission and the Deluxe Admission for the Concert on the Quad are available by calling the school at 475-9747, visiting the Trianon on The Colorado Springs School Campus at 21 Broadmoor Ave. during regular business hours, and online at www.css.org/ConcertOnTheQuad.aspx. Twenty Years of Helping the Elderly
Silver Key Senior Services - 07/16/08
July 14, 2008 - Colorado Springs, CO – The Pikes Peak Harley Owners Group #405 will hold their 20th Annual T-Bear Food Drive on Sunday, July 20 with all food items collected being donated to Silver Key Senior Services.
The Pikes Peak Harley Owners Group will be doing a "Poker Run," stopping at area grocery stores to buy food for Silver Key's food pantry. The poker run will end at Bott Park at approximately 1:00, where the group will have a picnic lunch. Following lunch, they'll ride in formation from Bott Park to Silver Key Senior Services at 2250 Bott Avenue, arriving at approximately 2:00pm.
The group's 2007 Run produced 3,200 pounds of non-perishable food items and personal toiletries. Pat Soderberg, Silver Key's director of Nutritional Services, commented "The timing for this food drive is great because during the summer the number of food donations begins to dwindle and our cupboards start to empty."

The food and personal toiletries are distributed to those age 60 and older. This program supplements the budgets of seniors by providing food for them, which means the money they would have spent on groceries can now be spent on other needs such as rent and medication.

If you are interested in supporting this event you may either ride (contact Colorado Springs Harley-Davidson) or you may drop off gifts of non-perishable food donations or gifts of money to Silver Key between 8am and 5pm, Monday – Friday, at 2250 Bott Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80904.

FIRE NEAR PETERSON AFB MOVES TOWARD CONTAINMENT
Peterson Air Force Base - 07/11/08
July 11, 2008

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Peterson firefighters are working with Colorado Springs and Fountain firefighters, and airport responders to suppress a fire south of the joint Peterson Colorado Springs Airport runway.
Thirteen firefighters and three senior fire officials from Peterson focused their efforts to contain the north and east sides of the fire.
They're currently conducting mop-up operations to prevent flare-ups. Mop-up is a firefighting term used to describe the tenuous work of ensuring the hot spots are sufficiently cooled to prevent the fire embers from starting new fires.
"Our guys worked really hard with a number of other fire departments," said Mr. Craig Powell, an assistant fire chief at Peterson. "We split the fire into divisions which made our response easier. They did an excellent job. We were lucky that when the fire started the wind was calm and we were able to place assets strategically along the perimeter."
As the fire response progressed weather conditions changed. "Weather conditions were tough. It was a hot day and the winds were changing," said Mr. Powell.
Peterson AFB has provided mutual aid fire and medical support for the airport since the base's establishment said Mr. David Reynolds, an assistant fire chief at Peterson. The base and city work very closely in a number of situations, and providing fire protection and emergency medical services to the airport is just one long-standing function.
While the type of support being provided today is only called for infrequently, it is the type of support Peterson firefighters are trained to provide. Peterson firefighters are trained to suppress fires involving aircraft, buildings, automobiles and wild land.
Peterson firefighters will continue to work with civilian fire agencies through the evening until full containment is met.

Master Jay Lee, a CSS alum, will lead the demonstration of high level breaking, self defense techniques, and creative forms choreographed to music at 6:30 p.m. in the Louise Honnen Tutt Field House on The Colorado Springs School campus. All families in the greater Colorado Springs area are invited to enjoy and learn from the 12 Korean masters touring the United States.
